N.B. Most of the artists in this history explored many different esoteric traditions and methods; so many artists may link to multiple traditions/methods. Also, while my intention is not to reduce the identity of any artist to their race, gender, sexuality, or geography alone--I do want others who self-identity in these aspects to be able to find their likeness here. And I certainly want these identities acknowledged more truthfully and proudly in American music history.
