Announced on Constitution Day (September 17) and officially releasing on Indigenous Peoples' Day (October 12), the third publication from AMP Press turns to the writings of Zitkala-Ša (1876–1938), a Yankton Dakota violinist, composer, writer, educator, and activist who lived and wrote inside an American contradiction--a nation whose framers are said to have drawn on Haudenosaunee political structure, yet denied Native Americans citizenship until 1924, following centuries of genocide.

This collection is unique in centering not so much her music as her ear, featuring the sacred silence and open listening of the Dakota tradition she inherited. Sound moves through her writing as both liberation and subjugation, joy and terror.

An introductory essay attunes the reader, followed by spiritual reflections, poetry, traditional legends, and personal dreams. The first half traces her spiritual identity and cosmology, centered on "Why I Am a Pagan" and its later revision, "The Great Spirit"—both included so we can witness how her thinking evolved—bridged by a visionary poem. The second half turns to legend and dream, including a devouring baby hellmouth, a trickster's death-song for ducks, the white man's devil, and an affirmational vision gifted by her grandfather.
